Description
ROGER WITTEVRONGEL
Born 1933
Lithograph, 8 colours
His images acquire, with his consent and almost incidentally, a power that is at once suggestive and revealing.
The image is not merely objective, despite the importance of the objects, nor is it merely factual, despite the sharpness of the gaze and the precision of the brushwork. The image has also become sensitive.
When looking at it, the viewer is not confined to a fixed image. The canvas contains a suggestion that invites escape and bears witness to the fact that, between the materiality of the objects depicted and their outward appearance, there remains room for interpretation.
The demystification is not entirely detached from the subconscious. The duality through which, as mentioned earlier, realism struggles to free itself is thereby confirmed.
Within the contemporary spectrum of the visual arts, Roger Wittevrongel occupies a pivotal position, where things are immediately perceptible yet also intuitively felt, and where the reality of his work takes precedence over its potentially attainable perfection, revealing its deeper meaning.
